“Meet LAFC: animal flashcards made with my daughter”
LAFC — Lara’s Animal Flashcards — is named after my daughter Lara. I build Baby Newt apps for her and with her, which means every idea gets tested by the toughest critic in the house.
I studied math education, so I have some pedagogy training, and when I looked for learning apps for Lara I kept finding ones built to grab attention: too bright and too erratic for her. LAFC is the calmer one I wanted to find.
LAFC started from something every parent of a toddler knows: they want to know what everything is called. Especially if it has four legs, feathers or an alarming number of eyes.
Every name is spoken aloud
Toddlers can’t read yet, so LAFC doesn’t ask them to. Every animal name is spoken aloud, and the cards are big, clear and easy for small fingers to tap.

Two ways to play
Learn mode: two animal cards appear and their names are spoken one after another. Your child taps their favourite — there are no wrong answers. The winner stays on to meet the next challenger, and the round ends with fireworks. (In our house the dog wins a suspicious number of rounds.)
Test mode: one card appears, a few names are spoken, and your child taps the one that matches. A wrong guess just gets a friendly “try again” — no buzzers, no red crosses. At the end there’s a little score recap of first-try matches.
Six animal worlds, eight languages
Pets, Farm, Wild, Birds, Bugs and Little Creatures, and Sea. And every name in English, German, French, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Italian or Croatian — handy for bilingual families, or for the moment your toddler discovers the language settings.
Calm by design
Simple screens, warm background music you can mute, and cheerful feedback instead of harsh sounds. It works well for a few quiet minutes before a nap or in the car, with you nearby.
LAFC is free to download on iPhone, iPad and Android, with no ads.
A note on privacy: Lara is part of the story, but she isn’t part of the marketing. You won’t see her photo here — just the apps she helps make.
