Developmental milestones between 0 and 2 months of age

In this period of your baby’s life, the development steps are small but so precious. We don’t think about looking at people’s eyes as an accomplishment but when your child really looks at you and is able to perceive your face for the first time, you feel like you are on the top of the world.

The best advice for this period of their life is to be there for them, to soothe them and get to know their reactions and needs. Of course, for first time parents most important advice is to also think about how to best conserve your strength because you will need it for your newborn.

Without further ado, here are developmental milestones children achieve during their first 2 months of life.

Social/Emotional Milestones

  • Calms down when spoken to or picked up
  • Looks at your face
  • Seems happy to see you when you walk up to her
  • Smiles when you talk to or smile at her
  • Can self-soothe by sucking on her hand

Cognitive Milestones (learning, thinking, problem-solving)

  • Watches you as you move
  • Looks at a toy for several seconds
  • Starting to get fussy if she’s feeling bored
  • Paying attention to the faces she sees

Language/Communication Milestones

  • Makes sounds other than crying
  • Alerted by sounds and turns toward them
  • Making cooing noises

Movement/Physical Development Milestones

  • Holds head up when on tummy
  • Moves both arms and both legs
  • Opens hands briefly
  • Arm and leg motions will be smoother
  • Can push up while on his belly and hold his head up

Please keep in mind that this is not medical advice. These developmental milestones are what 75% of children are capable of at this age. If your child does not achieve these milestones at this time, please do not be alarmed. Remember that you know your child best and if you do feel there is something wrong please contact your medical professional.
